.1-1 A HINT of a 3d. flat fare on Sunderland Corporation buses is given by Mr. Norman Morton, general manager of the undertaking, in a recently published report into the future of public transport in Sunderland. Four out of every, five passengers in the town pay 3d. or less for their journeys. The present maximum fare is 7d.
A 'disturbing feature of operations in Sunderland is the loss of passengers to company-operated services in the town. The local authority, states Cl1r. Jamieson, chairman of the transport committee, in an introduction to the report, builds new housing estates, but is denied the sole right to serve them. In most .cases the transport department has to share the. services with the companies on a 50-50 basis. The report reveals that during the past 10 years, the number of passengers using company buses on joint Services
to new estates has risen from zero to 5 m. per year. On bus design, Mr. Morton 'calls for the development of smaller tyres, thus reducing wheel arch size, and he would like to see the present type• of diesel engine replaced by a more compact, quieter and smoother unit, capable of good acceleration. The report is published in an attractive 56-page booklet.
