A FOUR-CYLINDER 2-164-litre diesel r engine has been developed by the Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, for use in its Caball and Junior 1-ton pick-ups and its Echo 20-passenger bus. The new engine has a maximum rating of 60 b.h.p. at 3,600 r.p.m., with a peak torque of 104 lb. ft. at 1,800 r.p.m., these figures showing high efficiency in relation to the engine's capacity.
With bore and stroke dimensions of 83 mm. and 100 mm. respectively, this new four-stroke indirect-injection unit has a compression ratio of 22 to 1. The in-line fuel-injection pump is described as "Bosch type A (Diesel Kiki)", and the engine has a quoted weight of 420 lb. Its dimensions are: length (including flywheel), 26.25 in.; width, 18.6 in.; and height, 25.75 in. Known as the SD22 unit, the new engine is said to be a development of the type displayed at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, and at present it is being produced in Nissan's Yokohama plant at a rate of 1.000 per month. In three or four months' time it will be built by Nissan's affiliate, Nissan Diesel Co. Ltd.
