• British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association president Freddy Aldous is accusing truck manufacturers of ignoring calls for better anti-theft devices.
No truck makers have won British Vehicle Security awards in the BVRLA's truck category—though Leyland Daf was commended—and Aldous said manufacturers had failed to meet acceptable security standards. The police and Home Office suggest central deadlocks, immobilisers and secured entertainment equipment should be fitted as standard.
The IWRLA commended Leyland Daf for fitting TruckGuard immobilisers to its 45 Series range but says it still doesn't merit the award.
"There was a feeling Leyland Daf had gone a very long way," says the BVRLA. Aldous says manufacturers ought to make more effort, considering the tens of thousands of pounds hauliers spend on their trucks.
