WILTSHIRE POLICE are warning operators to avoid the Stonehenge and Avebury areas following the chaos on the roads during last year's summer solstice. The force hopes this early warning will ease the levels of traffic on the A303 and the A360 around Stonehenge, and the A4
and the A4361, on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 June. The eastbound carriageway of the A303 is often congested on Sunday evenings as weekend commuters return to the Home Counties. Police say the expected 30,000 extra visitors to the ancient monuments will cause conges
tion throughout the night as they arrive, and again throughout the morning when they leave.
Between 4pm on 20 June and noon the following day the A344 near the Stonehenge visitor centre will be closed; any vehicles spotted illegally parked on the road verges will be removed.
