EAST SUSSEX haulier John Jempson & Son says winning several new customers at the start of the recession has helped it return to profit.
The Rye-based firm posted a pre-tax profit of £47,447 for the year to October 2009, up from a loss of £195,418 in 2008. However, turnover dropped to £9.8m from £12.1m the previous year.
Mark Chamberlain. MD at the company. which is a member of Palletforee, says thc results are "more than satisfactory" given the economic situation, continuing high fuel prices and a highly competitive market.
He adds: We think there have been signs in recent months that the economy may be starting to recover, "At the start of the downturn, we picked up a few extra customers and they have all contributed to the growth of the business."
The company says factors contributing to 2008's pre-tax loss include a £2.5m investment in 40 new trucks and trailers, and a series of exceptional items relating to redundancies.
