• Construction firms, hire companies and privatised utilities are the slowest payers in the whole of the UK's industry, according to new research.
A survey by global information services firm Experian indicates that large construction companies and hire firms average about 75 days to pay their bills; the privatised utilities average 62 days.
The fastest payers are in the agriculture, fishery and forestry sectors, where invoices are settles in an average of less than 51 days.
"Some large companies really do take advantage of their size," says Experian's Peter Brooker.
