by Bryan Jarvis • Food wholesaler Booker has become one of Mercedes-Benz's first fleet customers for its Actros tractive unit. Booker's total investment of more than £4m includes 33 Actros 25351.5 6x2s and 49 multi-temperature reefers and curtain-sided trailers.
The tractors are all 354hp (257kW) mid-lift units with Telligent 16-speed gearboxes and braking systems.
The outfits are based at Booker's new 39,500m2 regional distribution centre (RDC) at Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Lawrence David supplied 20 curtainsiders and 29 triple-compartment reefers came from Schmitz Cargobull, all with Thermo King refrigerators and Smart logic control systems.
The Actros units have split charging systems and the trailers are all fitted with BPW running gear, the rear axle being self-steer for extended tyre life.
According to Booker's fleet service manager David Landy "We expect to achieve more than twice the distance on our trailer tyres, around 200,000km compared with the 80,000km before we fitted self-steers".
Supplier S&B Commercials will maintain the vehicles jointly with Booker's own vehicle maintenance unit.
