We recently witnessed a practical demonstration of just how easy it is to make off with even a brand-new vehicle fitted with a security system acceptable to insurers. The precise details of the vehicle are largely irrelevant, as all are much of a muchness in security terms, but it was a recently launched 7.5tonner from a respected European manufacturer.
Our experiment took for granted that the steering lock had been deactivated, as even today such devices are next to useless in the face of any serious thief. The only effective obstacle to lock destroying and hot wiring is a product such as Kiltech's Lockshield.
With the steering lock defeated, the only real protection left was the time taken to tilt the cab. All that remained was to outwit the immobiliser and fuel valve—the work of a few seconds using a few items of extremely low-tech equipment such as could be found in most tool kits. With the engine started and the cab dropped, hey presto—goodbye to 30 grand's worth of truck.
