MD Ron Holmes says this milestone was achieved thanks to the commitment of his long-serving staff

MERCEDES-BENZ dealership S&B Commercials is celebrating its 30th anniversary: a milestone that MD Ron Holmes believes could not have been achieved without the commitment of his long-serving staff.
“I’ve employed the right people,” he said. “My irm view that staff should be treated with dignity has stood me in good stead over the years.” Underlining this point, S&B has eight employees who have clocked-up 30 years’ service. A further seven have achieved 25 years, with 10 more serving at least 20 years.
Holmes started the irm in 1982 when he undertook a management buyout of an ERF franchise that had previously traded as Sellers & Batty. In 1992 he was wooed by Mercedes: “I could only see the industry contracting in terms of the number of players and I thought, when it does, who will be left? So I went with the biggest truck maker in the world.”
Today the irm has an £80m turnover and employs 275 staff. ■
