Several arrests follow violent
hijackings. Jennifer Ball reports.
POLICE HAVE CHARGED eight men in the North-West on suspicion of a string of violent truck hijacks across the country that netted nearly a million pounds' worth of goods.
Officers from Hampshire police teamed up with detectives from Merseyside to arrest the men, who are accused of 10 offences including four hijackings.
The charges relate to a number of incidents last autumn. These include an incident at Sutton Scotney services in Hampshire in the early hours of 7 October 2004 when a French truck driver was assaulted and held for 10 hours;he was found in a field near Buffington Cross.
Other charges relate to the theft of £43,000 worth of brandy on the A34 in Winchester in October and the kidnap and heating up of a truck driver at a services on the M1 to steal his load of TVs last November.
The eight suspects have all been charged with conspiracy to rob and steal.They have also been charged over six other incidents including the theft of trucks loaded with goods including plasma TVs, microwaves and other kitchen appliances.
