THE IRISH GOVERNMENT has put the Working Time Regulations on hold while it consults with the industry on the regulations' impact on road hauliers and other groups. No date has been set for their introduction while in the UK the regulations became law on 4 April.
Junior Transport Minister Ivor Callely says his department is trying to comply as quickly as possible but Ireland has told the EU it was unable to meet the March deadline set for implementation.
"We are trying to work out the position of the working day and what is downtime and what is not," says Callely. -We are still talking to the stakeholders."
These include the Irish Road Haulage Association which admits the regulations have not been a priority. "We have had very little discussion on the matter," says IRHA president Vincent Caulfield,.
Callely says there are several practical problems: "What happens if a ship is delayed or the driver is delayed by an incident on the motorway? We will have to accommodate that."
