Speculation is rife that Cummins will not certify its 1 1-litre ISMe engine for Euro-4 after MAN commits all its tractors to the D20.
MAN-ERF's plan to equip its tractor units with the new MAN D20 engine has fuelled speculation that Cummins will not be certifying its ISMe 11-litre engine to meet the Euro-4 emissions standard.
The arrival of the D20 engine in ERF chassis at 430hp puts it headto-head with the Cummins offering at 420hp. With the D20 gaining a healthy reputation for fuel efficiency and Cummins unable to say if it will offer the 11-litre lump at Euro-4, the future for the US power plant looks bleak.
At the CV Show Cummins and MAN-ERF refused to make any commitment over the future of the Cummins unit after 2006 when Euro-4 becomes mandatory on all new vehicles.
Meanwhile BP, traditionally a major user of Cummins engines, has just ordered 10 D20-engined ERFs, all withTipmatic automatic transmission.
