By Will Shiers SCAnIIA’S EURO-6 long-haul tractors will cost roughly €12,000 (£10,600) more than its equivalent Euro-5 trucks, relecting development costs and the additional hardware required to tackle the latest round of emissions regulations. However, speaking at the unveiling last week, vice-president of powertrain development Jonas Hofstedt said that fuel economy would be on a par with the Euro-5.
Like Mercedes-Benz, which an
nounced vague details of its Euro6 engines last month, Scania has achieved the strict emissions standards by combining EGR, SCR and a particulate trap. Although Euro6 comes with a 75kg weight penalty, service intervals remain unchanged. However, the particulate ilter will need replacing at the second big service, which equates to one additional hour of downtime every two years.
The irst of Scania’s Euro-6 engines to be launched is the 13-litre, in 440hp and 480hp guises. Although available to order now, Scania expects low demand for several months, by which time it hopes European governments will have introduced inancial incentives for early adoption.
