• Threatened drivers' jobs at Isle of Arran-based haulier Arran Haulage have been saved after Caledonian MacBrayne ferrymen called off the strike which brought the island to a standstill.
Scottish west coast ferries were paralysed by the action over pay earlier this week which left the island in a "state of siege," according to Road Haulage Association Scottish director Wylie Cunningham.
Arran Haulage boss Donald E1allantine, speaking before a meeting on 4 August between Cal Mac and the RMT union where a 3% pay rise was accepted, said: "I am faced with two alternatives. Either I find another mode of transport, say a barge or a boat that our trailers can drive on to, or I temporarily lay off 15 drivers."
