• The Swiss authorities are planning further regulation of truck traffic through the St Gotthard Tunnel.
They have announced plans—to become effective within the next two to three years—to introduce an on-line reservation system for using the tunnel, in addition to a system of alternating cars and commercial vehicles (three cars to one truck).
Under the scheme, operators will be able to book their trips through the tunnel on the Internet, says the Road Haulage Association's International Group Bulletin. However, it warns that vehicles without reservations will not be allowed to pass through the tunnel unless there are vacant places.
The move is a direct consequence of the failure of Swiss government policy to move goods from road to rail, says the Swiss Road Haulage Association.
