• Hundreds of hauliers in the South-East have lost lucrative contracts to move scrap metal following a decision by a London recycling company to switch all its movements to rail.
Willesden-based Mayer Parry has used 300 truck journeys a day to move 800 tonnes of scrap metal for Co-Steel to its Sheerness furnace. But now trains belonging to soon-to-be-privatised rail freight company Mainline have taken 75% of the work.
Most of this was carried by Elsenham-based The Gables Group, which brought in owner-drivers. Mayer says the rail contract is still in its infancy. "About a quarter of the scrap metal goes by road to Sheerness and we still transport to Tilbury docks and Wales by road," it says.
