• The UK's first Euro-2 Scanias have gone into service with Northumbrian Water. The three P39MK 6x4s are fitted with 3,000-gallon tankers for sewage transport, In Euro-2 form the 8.5-litre straight-six non-EDC engine produces 247hp (184kW) and 1,180Nm (8701bit) of torque.
Northumbria has also specified Scania's AM61 straight front axle which gives an additional 110mm of ground clearance over the standard unit.
Whale Tankers built the vacuum tanks which are fitted with Mistral 650 extractor/compressors and independent Jurop VL14 pumps (for pumping water).
Northumbria is trying several "environmentally friendly" developments in its fleet including exhaust after-treatment.
The Scanias have a new livery designed for tanker bodywork by Michael Foster of Durham New College.
