• Parcelforce is to invest £7.7m to develop a parcel management system that will mean all parcels carried have a bar code. Parcelforce says the system will mean quicker service for its customers and more accurate billing.

Body talk
• Three of the UK's motor trade associations have joined forces to form the Confederation of UK Bodyshops. The new body is made up of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RM1), the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA), and the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA). It will provide a unified voice for the bodyshop industry.

TRAINING Modern apprentices
• The Motor Industry Training Standards Council has introduced a training scheme for Scottish youngsters. The Scottish Modern Apprenticeship is part of the skillseekers programme and trains 16-17year-old school and college leavers in motor vehicle services and repairs. The course lasts three years and leads towards Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level Three.

PUBLICATIONS Road harmony
• The International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the European Federation of Driving Schools (EFA) have published a booklet aimed at informing young drivers of the practical aspects of being on the road with LGVs. Sharing the Road with Lorries and Buses is available from driving schools.

Tipping valve
• West Midlands-based Chelsea PTO, manufacturer of power take-off units, has launched an electropneumatic proportional control (EPPC) valve for tippers. The EPPC is a hydraulic pump valve fitted to the tipping gearbox unit.

On-board charger
Mr/5 M_ L._ • Wolverhampton-based warehouse equipment manufacturer Still Materials Handling has introduced an on-board charger for its EGU range of motorised electric pallet handlers. The charger is built in to the EGU unit and can be charged from a standard 220-240V socket.

New scale
• Specialist weighing equipment manufacturer Timotex has developed a new on-board weighing system. The Supaweigh 4 scale provides better accuracy in hydraulic weighing and can be fitted on trucks or forklifts without obscuring vision, says Timotex.

• Petrol giant Shell has developed a new synthetic diesel engine oil. The Shell Helix range is said to improve engine cooling and reduces engine wear.

• American compressor manufacturer Ingersoll-Rand has launched a range of air compressors for workshop use. The Hobbycraft range can be fitted to pneumatic tools or spraying, greasing.

Trailer tracking
• In-cab computer manufacturer Leafield AVM and systems house Geografix have joined forces to develop a radio transmitted trailer monitoring system, The transmitter is mounted in a box on the front of the bulkhead and sends an identification code up to a distance of 300m.

London • Trafalgar Square: The lights on London's official Christmas Tree will be switched on at 18:30hrs on Thursday 7 December causing traffic delays on all surrounding routes, • A240 Kingston Road, Tolworth: Roadworks between Tolworth Broadway and Jubilee Way. Regular delays around the Worcester Park area and the A3.
The South East
• Al2 Essex: Roadworks and contraflow on the Stanway Bypass, near Colchester, with just one lane open in each direction, will cause heavy congestion until Christmas.
• A5 Buckinghamshire: Lane closures at Milton Keynes, between the Abbey Hill junction and Kelly's Kitchen Roundabout, causing delays until Christmas.
South West
• M5 Gloucestershire: Roadworks and contraflow between J11-12 will continue until Christmas.
• M5 Somerset: Bridge repairs with lane closures both ways between J21-22 are expected to continue until mid-February.
The Midlands and East Anglia
• M6 Staffordshire: One lane closed northbound for roadworks near J14 until mid-December.
• M50 Hereford and Worcester: Roadworks and lane closures in both directions between J1-2 will cause delays until Christmas.
The North
• M1 West Yorkshire: Roadworks and a contraflow at the end of the motorway at J47 until summer 1997.
• A595 Cumbria: Resurfacing work at Wigton with restrictions near the Red Dial junction until Christmas.
Wales
• A449/A40 Gwent: Roadworks continue between Newport and Monmouth, with much of the route reduced to a single lane until late December.
• A547 Gwynedd: Bridge repairs with temporary traffic lights near the A55 junction at Llandudno continue until April 1996 causing regular holdups.
Scotland
• Motherwell, Strathclyde: Roadworks on Airbles Road between Hamilton Road and Windmill Hill Street will cause delays until mid-December.
• A768: Lasswade Bridge in Edinburgh is closed for repairs until Christmas.
Northern Ireland
• County Tyrone: Roadworks on the Omagh Bypass at the junction with Derry Road until May 1996.
