I was always under the impression the Driver's Hours Rules and Regulations were introduced as a safety measure. How, then, is this reflected o the proposed exemption for owner-drivers?
If owner-drivers are to be made exempt from the regulations, as proposed by Brussels, this will cause a lot of bad feeling between employed and self-employed drivers.
The employed driver is having his hours curtailed, with a corresponding cut in wages, while the owner-driver can still earn a decent wage at our expense.
I cannot see my boss being prepared to keep my wages at the level they are now if I have to work fewer hours, and I think it will be the same for most employers in this industry. When I came into this industry I expected to work long hours and lobe away from home for most of the week. I did not expect to start on a Monday and have to park up on a Wednesday night because was Out of hours.
