,.;i! The prospect of hauliers moving tanks on a regular basis looks more likely to happen after it emerged that the Ministry of Defence is considering privatising more of its transport operations.
Earlier this week a leaked document belonging to the Defence Logistics Organisation 0:11.01—the body set up a year ago to oversee how the MoD provides logistical support to the armed forces—revealed the possible extent of future privatisation.
At the heart of the changes is the outsourcing of transport operations presently handled by the armed forces. Although this would be pod news for hauliers tendering for the work, it has provoked a storm of protest from senior officers alarmed by the prospect of outside contractors providing logistical support close to the front line.
A spokesman for the DLO says no decisions have been taken and the document is nothing more than a discussion paper. However, he did reveal that the MoD is reviewing which operations could be privatised and how much money could be saved.
Any future work would probably be put out to tender." he says. "It would be done in the same way as we outsourced a lot of the heavy haulage that the MoD undertakes."
