• A two-acre £410,000 underground vehicle park is to be built on a "void area" that used to be a railway siding at Smithfield Market. It will take about 450 cars or a proportionate number of lorries.
The park will house market and private vehicles during the day and at night accommodate heavies coming in from all over the country. Instead of parking on the highways, these vehicles will wait their turn for unloading in a bay in the new car park.
Close to the park will be a hostel comprising a 36-bed dormitory, recreation room and restaurant where drivers can wait until their vehicles are called for unloading.
When will the building be finished? A Corporation of London official stated: "We are due to start building in the next few weeks and it is anticipated that the job will take 70 weeks to complete. Parking and hotel charges have not yet been fixed."
