annual vehicle test for cars and light vans. I understand that the fee for this test has recently been increased, and that the examination has now been extended to vehicle tyres. Can you advise?
AThe annual vehicle test fee for cars and
light vans was increased from 15s. to £1 5s Od. and for solo motorcycles from 1 Os 6d to 17s 6d on November 11, 1968. This is the first change in fee since the scheme started in 1960.
The test does now include tyres and it has been estimated that the addition of tyre examination accounts for about half of the fee increase.
There has also been a corresponding increase in re-test fees. If a vehicle fails to get a certificate, a full examination of brakes, lights, steering, and tyres must be made on re-test, even though this may include items which were found to be satisfactory on the first test. This is because any certificate must relate to the condition of the vehicle at the time that the certificate is issued.
However, a re-test will be carried out at a reduced fee provided the vehicle is left for repair and re-test at the garage which carried out the original examination, or is taken within 14 days of the initial examination to any authorized examiner and left for repair and re-test.
Details of the scheme and the recent fee increases are contained in the Motor Vehicles (Tests) Regulations. 1968 (SI, 1968 No. 1714) price 2s 6d net.
