:IR EATER Manchester L'ouncil has rejected a uggestion by its transport trategy committee that an extra £2.5m should be granted in support of its PTE bus fares.
Instead, it accepted a recommendation from the policy and finance committee that additional subsidy should be limited to E I.5m, which would bring the level of bus subsidies up to £18.5m in 1975-6.
1975-6.
The decision followed controversy over the priority that should be given to subsidizing public transport. A large rise in bus fares later this year is now considered to be inevitable. This will be on top of the recent 20 per cent increase.
GMT officials fear the second increase may have to come into force as early as June and could mean another 25 per cent on bus fares in the area.
The bus service is expected to start its financial year in April with no reserves and an operating deficit of about E4.5m.
