• Road safety group Brake has branded as "mere tokenism" government plans for a campaign to warn drivers of the dangers of tiredness.
The Department of Transport is planning to spend £500,000 on an Easter campaign to persuade drivers to take a break—a quarter of its budget for annual drink-driving campaigns.
The move follows the Selby rail disaster which was caused after driver Gary Hart fell asleep at the wheel of his Land Rover. But Brake chief executive Mary Williams says: "The announcement of such a small amount of money for advertising is insulting to the families of the bereaved. It won't pay for much more than the cost of designing an advert. You certainly won't see the advert being run every night on prime-time television."
