Survey gloom • Of 200 operators contacted for an FTA survey less than 25% expect to move more goods than they did in 1992 — and only 15% anticipate any sort of expansion.
On track iii The Government has stressed its determination to press ahead with railway privatisation. Transport Secretary John MacGregor said privatisation was going "full speed ahead". He rejected suggestions the Government's proposals were stalled and would have to be revised.
FTA protest • The Freight Transport Association has made a strong protest to the Department of Transport over its plans to increase the grant fee for 0-licences to £170. The FTA describes the proposed rise as "excessive" and "totally unacceptable".
Smoke check III Drivers of commercial vehicles with diesel engines are reminded that smoke emission checks are now in the MoT test. The limits are 3.2m' for non turbocharged engines and 3.7m-' for turbocharged engines and pre-1 August 1975 vehicles with non-turbocharged engines.
