Councils in Scotland are reporting "critically low levels of salt" for treating roads due to problems obtaining stocks from suppliers.
Dr Bob McLellan, head of transportation at Fife Council, says: "For the past two weeks, we have been working to try to source additional salt for the roads.
"Most, if not all Scottish councils, appear to be in a similar situation, and stock levels are at critically low levels in many councils across Scotland." lain Mitchell, managing director of Grangemouth. StirUngshre, haulier John Mitchell Haulage and Warehousing, tells CM: "The past two-and-a-half weeks have been grim. I've seen five inches of ice in some places. The process seems to be it snows a bit, ices up, then snows a bit more.
"The motorways and main roads aren't too bad, but once you get onto the quieter routes, it's terrible. Things are pretty tough. I've never known the conditions to be this bad."
