Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We read with interest the article in CM (23-29 June) relating to EFL introducing 44-thnners into intermodal service in the UK.

Seawheel Division of IJnited Transport has been undertaking intermodal 44tonne operation within the UK since 21 April 1994, and have successfully conveyed a significant number of units within the UK.

Regrettably we have been disappointed with the delayed response in introducing 44tonne GVW vehicles at rail terminals by Rfl) but have successfully secured alternatives from the mad haulage industry. We would point out that the introduction of the 44-tonne GVW fleet by RID is not a pioneering move, but a belated response to established practice within private road haulage.

The experience gained in intermodal movements at 44 tonnes over the past two months, via Tilbury, will, we believe, be invaluable for the introduction of intermodal business through the Channel Tunnel.
