HUNDREDS OF operators are to be questioned about the impact of the rising cost of fuel on their business as part of a survey into hauliers' ability to recover fuel price increases.
The Logistics Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University says that since January 2004, the average price of diesel in the European Union has risen by 25%.
As fuel accounts for a third of truck operating costs, large fuel price increases can seriously erode profit margins. However, it is not known how common it is for hauliers to be compensated for fuel price increases and how this is achieved.
Professor Alan McKinnon says: "Anecdotal evidence suggests some operators can do well by having a clause in their contracts, while for others it is a long drawn out process and even then they arc only able to recover a percentage of any fuel price increase."
