MITE motorbus ramifications of _L United Automobile Services, Ltd., the headquarters of which are at York, are most comprehensive and, as our readers know, have been referred to on many occasions in our columns. Considerable developments are proceeding
in connection with thecompany's activities, and amongst these mention can be made of a new depot which has recently been opened at Blyth, Northumberland.
The area of this new depot covers 29,000 sq. ft. and provides accommodation for 100 vehicles. The equipment includes much up-to-date plant, enabling periodical dock overhauls to be undertaken, units to be changed. and bodywork repainted. An inspection pit, equipped with vices and electric light, is available, as well as battery-charging Plant and air compressors. The petrolstorage equipment comprises a 3,000gallon underground tank, with a Bowser 5-gallon self-measuring pump installation.
A special feature of the depot is that a clear floor space is available and use of stanchions is avoided by a cantilever truss roof, thus ensuring greater accommodation and facilitating the manmuvring of vehicles. There is a stores section, which is made up of 2,500 bins, and carries spares and material for all types of vehicle run by the company. There are foremen's and ticket offices, 40 ft. long by 14 ft. wide, which are equipped with electric light and gas heating. It is interesting to learn that the depot was designed by the engineering staff of the company.
