in a Day, Court Told
AFTER hearing that a driver employed by Bristol Street Motors, Birmingham, had sometimes worked 171hours in a day, the Birmingham stipendiary magistrate fined the company £22 last week. They had admitted allowing Kenneth Harvatt to work without 10 consecutive hours' rest in 24, and to drive more than 11 hours.
Mr. F. H. Groves, defending, said Harvatt was mainly employed as a storeman, and had to take engines to Dagenham, returning to Birmingham with replacements. It was believed that he could complete the 280-mile return journey in the legal time, but he often had to wait at Dagenham for his return load. He spent the time there in a canteen.
Drivers had now been instructed that if they could not return to Birmingham in the legal time, they were to stay overnight at Dagenham, Mr. Groves added.
Harvatt was fined £5 10s. for committing the offences.
