• The continuing recession and falling inflation rate kept wage increases for drivers down to around 3.5-5.5% in the past year, according to the employment research group, Incomes Data Services.
In a drivers' pay study just released, IDS says employers are showing no signs of recovery and that for the year until early April all pay settlements were well down on the previous year. For the year to April 1991 a third of companies settled for increases of 10-11%.
▪ The government is fighting to exempt lorry drivers from EC plans to restrict the working week to 48 hours. A Department of Employment report says LGV drivers work 53.4 hours a week.
