• Police in Devon and Cornwall are warning drivers using the 838 through Plymouth to beware of items being thrown from bridges onto the road after a driver was injured trying to avoid a bicycle thrown from a footbridge.
Children were thought to be behind the incident last Tuesday (29 October I, in which the BMX bike caused a car to crash and then collide with a truck. Both drivers escaped with cuts and bruises.
PC Baxter Provan says this isn't the first incident of its type: ''There is a stretch of about a mile cutting through the city with residential areas on both sides which Is crossed by two footbridges and a road bridge. We have had rocks, stones and a child's scooter thrown off these bridges at passing traffic."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the Incident, but also warn that drivers should take care when passing under bridges on this stretch of road.
Checking before passing under bridges is a key part of police training, says Provan: "When you are approaching bridges always glance up to ensure there's nothing up there that is dangerous. If you see people throwing things off bridges, dial 999 as it's something which puts life at risk."
The Plymouth incident follows previous warnings from the Metropolitan Police who urged London drivers to be vigilant after bricks—and on one occasion a brake drum—were thrown at passing trucks from a bridge on the A11 ( C4f1-7 Aug).
