Should we raise the 40mph limit on single-carriageway roads CM24-30 OcOP I am very much against the raising of this limit, in the interest of safety for all road users. Having driven antics for 17 years on longdistance haulage I think lain qualified to comment.
Over the past seven years I have had to deal with speeding lorries in my job as an Approved Driving Instructor (cars). Sadly I think it is a fact of today's driving that drivers have lost the art of overtaking and I blame this an speeding lorries.
If a truck is sticking to its 40mph limit then car drivers are happy to overtake on single carriageways as a 20mph difference in speed allows them to overtake safely and comfortably within the 60mph national speed limit. But drivers are not happy to overtake lorries exceeding the 40mph limit as this makes the manoeuvre illegal, which results in tail-backs.
Secondly, do not understand why HGV drivers speed in the first place. It's not like they get paid well for the job---I am sure that I would not risk life and limb for peanuts or ungrateful employers.
