A DEVICE intended to eliminate the rt effects of brake torque reaction in the suspension of rear axles is to be shown by Henry Boys and Sons, Ltd., at the Commercial Motor Show. Although being shown as applied to a third-axle conversion the unit will become available for all types of road vehicle eventually.
The brake torque eliminator will be shown fitted to a Dodge with a Boys third-axle conversion. It consists of a hydraulic cylinder fitted between the third axle and a cross-member of the chassis. During normal running the piston is free but exerts a damping effect which improves the riding qualities of the vehicle. When the brakes are applied a valve in the cylinder is closed and the piston holds the axle rigidly against the brake torque. Compensation is incorporated for shock loads but it is claimed that the system does not hunt.
