* Hauliers who pay Italian tolls by invoke are entitled to a 10% reduction if they use the motorways between 22:00-06:00hrs. The incentive, designed to cut daytime traffic, lasts until 31 December.
* The Austrian Government is not confirming reports that the country will introduce a general motorway toll for all trucks and buses next year. Press reports in Vienna suggest that it will issue German-style vignettes to stick in windscreens.
* New rules governing truck exhaust emissions are expected to be announced by the European
Commission by the end of the year. They are designed to cut ozone emissions but will also restrict evaporation while filling up with diesel.
* Only trucks passing special tests for low exhaust gas and noise emissions will be allowed into Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo city centres from 1 April 1996. Local authorities have declared that all three city centres are environmental protection zones.
Jo, Hauliers could be asked to cut their rates in return for more volume on the road feeder link of combined road-rail distribution operations. The International Union of Continental Road Rail Companies has set up a working party to look at the issue now but is struggling because it aims to be neutral to truck operators.
