• Laser-guided speed traps that can outsmart radar detectors and book thousands of speeding drivers a day will soon be used by UK police forces.
Thames Valley police will be able to catch three speeding vehicles every second when they introduce laser-guided video cameras early next year. The cameras will send the infor mation to Banbury, Oxfordshire, where the police national computer will automatically issue £40 tickets to drivers.
Police believe the system will net many more speeders because it cannot be detected by cab-mounted radar detectors and requires fewer officers to operate it. Thames Valley's roadside cameras have trapped 53,000 drivers and raised £2m. And fatal accidents have decreased by 37% since they were introduced three years ago.
Li Although it is not illegal to sell a radar detector in the UK, it is illegal to use one. If convicted the courts can impose a fine of up to .0,000.
