UNION LEADERS are to press Tesco for a single deal covering pay and conditions for more than 4,000 transport workers amid fears that the company is targeting these factors in a cost-cutting drive.
The switch away from local bargaining is being requested following a meeting of 20 Transport & General Workers Union shop stewards from around the country on Friday (1 September).
One of them has told CM that national bargaining would give the union more streng,th;"We've been trying to get this for a few years now. It's seen as the way forward."
The row over alleged erosion of terms and conditions has been highlighted by Tesco's decision to replace its distribution depots in Livingston and Dundee with a £75m depot at Livingston.
A preliminary ballot on industrial action among more than 150 drivers at Livingston has been suspended after the company withdrew proposals that included reducing the hours which would qualify workers for night-time premiums (CM 17 August). Tesco's revised offer is expected to include the option of drivers keeping their existing terms and conditions.
The results of a ballot among 85 drivers at Dundee on whether to pursue industrial action over their severance terms is due to be announced on Tuesday (12 September),
