For an operator, the immediate benefits of renting a trailer have risen dramatically as contract lengths have shrunk.
With more Cartwright Rental depots opening, it's a market the company is focusing heavily on. 'We have been doing rental and lease a long time," says Steven Cartwright, "and the rental job is only going one way. Operators Can't get the commitment from customers. The 12-month contract is a good one now; a five-year one is like gold dust."
One rental area that Cartwright and his firm have exploited is the double-deck market. He says: 'The utilisation of spot-rental for double-deck fleets is 95% all year round. Cartwright is building more double-decks, and returning double-decks through Cartwright Finance can be put onto the rental fleet, "The opposite end of the scale is modifying products for urban work as operators look to maximise tractors and productivity and deliver with short-wheelbase urban trailers.
He adds: "There aren't many tandem-axle urban trailers about: they're becoming popular. Operators [seem to be] replacing their rigids "We are doing 10 now: they were 13.2m tandem-axle curtainsider trailers. We have shortened them, refurbished them and they now have customers, because they are in-demand trailers," he concludes.
