• An Essex driver has issued a warning to other drivers about the latest trick illegal immigrants are using to board trucks at Calais.
Russell Middleton says that illegal immigrants are jumping on board trucks when the driver is distracted at the ticket booth. Writing on the Trucknetwebsite, Middleton says that he arrived in Calais recently at around 02:30hrs. He then went into the Seafrance office to deal with his hazardous goods paperwork.
He then stopped for carbon dioxide checks and noticed a shiny area on his fuel tank, which had previously been dirty. He let the security guards do the checks and discovered that four stowaways had cut through the trailer roof and settled inside.
Middleton, who works for Abram Transport on contract for DFDS at Dartford, says that he never saw security or police anywhere near the ticket booths. "This could only have happened outside the Seafrance office as I did not stop once I left the tunnel until I arrived at the port. As I stood there I noticed that as a lorry arrived at the ticket booth two people would jump over the barrier and run behind the lorry. This was happening to about every second lorry that arrived."
