• Trailer registration is likely to be brought in on Jan 1,2004 and could help cut theft and improve safety.
A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says the move now looks much more likely, following calls from the Commercial Trailer Association (CM13-19 June).
Initial registration of in-service trailers is due from July 2003 using VI databases, and the SMMT spokesman says the issue is currently being examined to see how all trailers can be registered.
"If only new trailers were regis
tered, it would take 15-20 years to ensure all the UK's trailers were registered, which is untenable," he says.
"Some people are still asking why it is necessary to register trailers as each one has a 17-digit vehicle identification number. Our answer would be that it's impossible for police to read that when they are on the M6 doing 60mph following a truck and trailer. 'Britain is the only country in Europe which doesn't currently register trailers, although we have the biggest trailer parc in Europe.'
It is believed that the trailer registration plate will be a similar style to motorcycle registration plates and it will be positioned on the opposite side of the vehicle to the tractor's registration plate.
