Like other haulage disciplines, there's strong competition from overseas livestock transporter manufacturers. One company currently attempting to break into the UK is Fezzaioli of Montichiari, Italy, which offers a wide range of aluminium chassisless multi-deck rigid and trailers throughout the EC. The first one into the UK has been bought by Driffield haulier Chris Waite to run with his Renault Magnum, and he's impressed with it. A 13.4m tri-axled stepframer it has insulated sides and floors, ram-operated triple decks for holding three tiers of sheep or two of cattle and an independent 600mm raising roof.
Complete with drinking systems such trailers tare out at around 11 tonnes.
Waite has another on order with rear steering axle that with a new Scania 6x2 unit will allow him to run at 44 tonnes as and when the limit rises. It goes on the road in February.
