DIGITAL TACHOGRAPHS could be introduced as early as next April, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
However, the exact launch date is still unclear and could be anywhere between April and June. Operators will only be given 20 days' warning.
Allan McKenzie, senior technical manager at the SMMT, describes the situation as "very messy": The difficulty is that no one knows when the decision will he published — and predicting it is too much of a lottery," he adds.
James Hookham, deputy chief executive of the Freight Transport Association, comments: "I'm disappointed that the government hasn't put some certainty and leadership into the issue. Too many people are delaying preparing for digital tachographs and will be unprepared."
