• Toll hikes of up to 130% on the Brenner Tunnel in Austria are now in force despite a lastminute protest by the International Road Transport Union that the increases are unacceptable".
The single-journey toll for vehicles with more than three axles has risen by 50% to £98.50.
The RTU called on the European Commission to apply pressure on the Austrian government to reverse the rise. The normally reticent employers' body says: "Once again in the history of transit through the Alps this is a case of an excessive and uneconomical charge, penalising coaches and trucks, which cannot be justified by a matching increase in infrastructure costs."
