• A scheme to counter the growing number of thefts of livestock trailers has been launched by North Yorkshire Police and the National Farmers Union.
Following a spate of trailer thefts in Yorkshire, livestock hauliers and farmers have joined forces to protect all trailers with security marks.
More than 45 trailers were stamped when the scheme was launched last week and further stamping days are planned soon.
Trailers are engraved with an identification number and the name and address of the owner in four or five different places, making them less attractive to thieves.
Police hope the scheme will act as a deterrent. But a spokesman says: "This is only a small step in the right direction. We think manufacturers should improve branding to make trailers even more difficult to steal.
