Dealers are optimistic that trading conditions will improve in 2007, dismissing the recent downturn as the traditional end-of-year slump.
Used vehicle dealers reported that the used truck business as a whole slowed down at the end of last year—but according to Glass's Guide chief CV editor George Alexander, many felt this trend was simply a seasonal downturn and believe the first half 42007 will provide better trading conditions.
Nonetheless,he reports that many dealers think the tractor market will be even more uncertain than last year:"Initially.it's probable that the first late-year examples of Euro-4 artics will fall short of equivalent Euro-3 models of the same age.
"If true. this will be attributable to Euro-4 artics achieving fewer miles per tank due to the emissions burden they must bear. However, this will become less significant as the availability of Euro-3 models dries up and the industry moves on to Euro-5."
Alexander adds that plenty of mediocre 1990s box, curtainsider and even refrigerated box vans are still doing the rounds at auction: "These are typically hard-used and sell for Li ,25042,500 depending more on their badge than the registration plate."
Prices for post-2000 clean stock have had a shot in the arm because they represent the type of retail stock dealers are after. "From 2003 onward, a premium is being paid for MercedesBenz. Daf, lveco and MAN dropsiders/boxes that haven't covered too many miles and are well presented,"Alexander concludes. •
