• In mid-January Mr David McVeigh, chairman of the Transport Association, is flying to Peru via Rome to take up an appointment as transport consultant to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Although Mr McVeigh is due to retire in March as transport director of Ross Group, he has been granted 12 weeks leave to undertake this unusual consultancy in Lima, advising on the distribution of fish throughout Peru, In 1953, Mr McVeigh joined Ross Group to establish a national distribution network for fresh fish and frozen foods. He became an MBE for his part in organizing coastal defence work during the East Coast floods in 1953.
He was chairman of McVeigh Transport Ltd, Grimsby, until recently, when the company was acquired by 1-lumber Warehousing Ltd.
On returning to the UK Mr McVeigh will continue in transport as an independent consultant.
Peru has a most difficult terrain, not comparable with the UK, with a 2000-mile coastline, and roads attaining altitudes of up to 15,000ft.
