• Last week's fuel price increases are the latest of several rises which are in total estimated as likely to put up haulage rates by approximately 3 per cent.
The Road Haulage Association commercial committee, which considers costs and rates, is to meet on January 19. Probably, the members will try to get a complete picture of cost changes over the past six months or year; information from the costs and productivity scheme (CAPS) besides members' individual experiences will be available. Increased fuel costs will, it is noted, represent a different proportion of operating costs to different operators. The general rise recently has been /1;1 a gallon to all grades of motor spirit, Derv, gas oil, burning oil and fuel oils. And it was preceded by two fuel price increases in recent months; tyres have increased in price, too, during this time. And CM understands that hauliers are now discovering that suppliers are offering ld a gallon less rebate on bulk supplies than before.
