• The Northern General Transport Co. Ltd, 'and United Automobile Services Ltd are seeking higher fares to meet increased running costs. United said that higher wages and increases in other charges would cost £950,000 a year, but some of this extra cost would be covered by operating economies. Under the Northern General proposals, the 3d minimum would go up to 5d, all fares between Is and 2s by 2d and fares over 2s by 5d.
United is to increase short journey fares by 2d and there will be a rising scale of increases in other fares ranging up to a maximum of Is 9d. The United application will be heard by the Traffic Commissioners on January 28 and the Northern application on February 2.
