• A Telford operator who had Sal December to arrange an overbeen given until the beginning of
draft facility of at least £4,000 has had his licence suspended by West Midland Traffic Commissioner John Mervyn Pugh. When he appeared before the TC in November, Gerald Jones, trading as GB Transport Services, had admitted that he lacked the money to pay fines, costs and back duty of £920 (CM 27 Nov-3 Dec 1997). The case had been adjourned in April to await the outcome of pending prosecutions. For Jones, Michael Carless said that he had phoned to say that he was not well enough to attend the hearing. He was unable to say if Jones had paid the fines in full. Suspending the licence from midnight on the day of the public inquiry, Mervyn Pugh said that he had to suspend it. It had been perfectly clear on the last occasion that Jones did not have sufficient money if he had not arranged any finance with the bank.
He had a duty to ensure that operators who did not have the funds to operate did not operate. He would be prepared to lift the suspension when Jones could prove he had his finances in order.
