inconsistent headlamp alignment checks, Vosa has introduced an electronic measurement system that will be used in HGV annual roadworthiness tests.
Following a consultation with operators ('Vosa sees the light on headlamp aim tests', CM 11 September 2008). Vosa will be electronic beam testing for headlamp aim at all testing stations from this month.
It hopes to reduce the 20.75% of first-time test failures attributed to headlamp misalignment under the previous system.
Andy Mair, head of engineering policy at the Freight Transport Association, says: "We welcome Vosa's simplification of the test with a headlamp aim standard 'window' and the removal of the human error factor with this electronic method."
Dealers complained the old test was problematic because it was easy for misalignment to occur through simole obstacles such as speed bumps on the way into a test centre.
